I've worked with a lot of mechanics over the course of my years and John is single-handedly the best mechanic I've ever had the pleasure of working with... He's incredibly knowledgeable, fairly priced and will give your car the love it deserves... I don't give out five-star ratings very often but Black Forest Motors is definitely deserving..

This is the place to go if you own a BMW in Bozeman. John is a great. I brought it to him for the brakes, and he went above and beyond to help me fix some trim on my X5 which required extra time on his part to track down the parts. I would go to John with any issue and feel confident that he would give me a real and honest answer.

So stoked to find a such a qualified BMW service so close to me. No driving to Idaho falls or Spokane. This guy John was incredibly knowledgeable on all models BMW. Even rare Beemers like mine. I had mice chew my oil level sensor wiring harness, (not a rare occurrence) I mentioned the symptoms, and he knew just what to do. Luckily for me , his first appointment was late and he had me out of there within the hour. I could not be happier. As a lifelong BMW guy, I could tell this guy knows his stuff. I also noticed how clean and organized his shop was. Must be the Navy training. Veteran owned a plus in my book. Thank you John Tovaas. Travis long

i just moved to bozeman from tucson and was concerned i would be able to find someone to work on my 1997 z3. i only know one location that might have been john’s equal. and he’s retired. i recommend them highly. you won’t be disappointed

Premium service and fair prices. A reliable place for routine services and repairs while the owner (and mechanic) is pleasantly accommodating to your schedule and takes the time to outline what the problem is and how to fix it. I’ve gone to Black Forest for oil changes, engine issues, and coolant issues and have had a good experience every time. I’ve always left feeling like a premium service or repair was completed at a fair price. I once made the mistake of going elsewhere for a simple oil change because it was a couple bucks cheaper but quickly learned my lesson as the other shop actually broke another, and far more expensive, piece of my vehicle during the service. Black Forest actually repaired this piece too. I’m not a car mechanic but I do have a mechanical engineering degree so I feel a lot better when a shop is able to tell me what’s going on in engineering layman’s. And black forest does just that. They’re accommodating enough to tell you why you’re receiving that warning message, what part should be replaced, it’s function on the car, and how a replacement or repair will resolve the issue. Giving you the confidence that an expert is making repairs in your best interests rather than a dealership holding your car hostage to eke out every dollar possible from you. I even once took my car in with little warning because of a coolant issue I noticed on a cold morning. Black Forest quickly ran some checks to see if there was a leak but found none and deduced that it was likely due to extremely cold temps and some difference between how a rubber hose vs. a plastic/metal fitting shrunk and once the car’s temps were back to normal, the leak was gone. Black Forest topped off my coolant and had me on my way without having to pay for labor. I wouldn’t expect that every time but I do think it’s a story that embodies the Black Forest expertise in car mechanics plus very accommodating service where they know that they’ll be able to stay in business by being a trusted shop for various repairs and services but don’t have the need to buckle and dime you for a quick check. It’s hard to find a quality auto shop, but once you do it’s great and invaluable to stick with them. Black Forest is mine and maybe they’ll become yours too. Mini Cooper Countryman S All4
