Car Tune Automotive Service and Repair

No regrets leaving our Volvo S60 with Kevin and crew at Car Tune after having valve failure on our way back to Colorado. He was clear in communicating the diagnosis and what the repair would likely involve. In spite of some time waiting for parts and an unfortunate head gasket replacement, we were very fortunate that the repair was done at Car Tune. Their experience, honesty and quality work was definitely appreciated.

Broke down 7 miles outside of butte on a Sunday evening. Spent the night in my car at the pull off and called mechanics as soon as shops started opening at 8am the next day. Car tune was my 3rd call after 2 big “NO”’s from other local shops. After Car Tune reluctantly said to bring it by, I again clarified that it would need to be towed there and wanted to ensure they could work on my unique car. They confirmed. So I had it towed there Monday afternoon (finding tow trucks via AAA is difficult in Butte apparently, so I had to find and pay $250 for my own tow to get there). When I arrived, the owner looked at my car out front of the shop, with his flashlight, for less than 5 minutes before diagnosing a very expensive fix. He then had zero interest in sourcing the part and told me to do it myself. He added that while I find my part and have it shipped, that I’ll need to park my IMMOBILE car elsewhere. The car I just agreed to pay $250 to have towed there. My part could take 2 weeks to arrive and he allowed me to tow it there, while knowing that my car parts were hard to source bc I told him this when I first called. He then added that I need to stay with my rig and should pay to camp bc vandalism is very high in the area. I’m fine sourcing my own parts with mechanic assistant to ensure they are correct, but never have I towed my car to a shop and then been told to tow it away again while I need to find my own parts. After being disregarded and spoken down to by the owner (not the other employee who shares that same name who was respectful and helpful), as a solo woman traveling I decided to go with my gut and tow my car far, far away from this entirely uncomfortable and expensive mechanic experience. Best decision ever! If you are considering Car Tune and have the means to get to Big Timber (I used my AAA 200 mile tow for free and just waited until they found someone to pick me up), I highly suggest that you head over to CMC Diesel instead where the mechanics are honest and will do work to get you fixed. I never even had to help them find my part and they had it to their shop in 1 business day. I was out the door in 3 total from bringing it in. Add on that they quoted me for an additional (expensive) fix that was not real. Standard chauvinist behavior towards single women at mechanic shops. Insult to injury that the Red Wrecker tow driver told him to add the $250 tow cost to my mechanic bill and while I had agreed to that price with Red Wrecker, Car Tune then charged me $285 and added an extra 4% credit card fee on top of it for the tow on my mechanic invoice. Moral of the story: Do NOT trust. Take elsewhere is you are a woman and don’t feel like needing to cross check your mechanic for honesty. (FTR: Red Wrecker towing was great and I do not hold it against them for Car Tune taking advantage of the situation)

Kevin and his crew are awesome. My car broke down on the interstate outside of Butte. I was able to get it towed there while waiting for the tow truck we discussed the issues and he had the parts waiting. He fixed only what needed fixing and made recommendations of something that needs but not urgent. I highly recommend Car Tune.

They helped us out in a pinch when all of the auto shops in Butte were backed up with work on the day I'm writing this. We were traveling west on vacation and coming into Butte when we had a flashing check engine light come on while making the climb into town, so we needed help fast. We tried calling 5 other shops in town and they were all too busy to work on it. We finally called CarTune and Kevin said they could pull the code and take a look at it but "no promises" that they could make the time to fix it in a day. Turns out we had a cylinder misfire and they were able to get the parts (ignition coil and spark plug) delivered and fix it in pretty quick time. We were lucky it wasn't something worse. We'll get the rest replaced once we get back home. It was a fair price. Parts and one hour labor. They really helped us get back on the road in good time and they were friendly. They showed the evidence of the problem on the old parts and explained what was wrong. I'd recommend them to anyone.

My 2010 Escape hybrid had some very strange issues with randomly not starting and then sometimes shutting off mid-drive. The first shop I took it to couldn't diagnose the issues, and the dealership was a multi-week wait and would've been hundred$$ just to diagnose. These folks were able to get everything diagnosed and repaired in a day, and when one of the replacement spark plugs was defective, they fixed that the next day for no additional charge. Everything worked great on a 1500 mile road trip a couple weeks later. I'll be going to Car Tune for all my car service needs as long as I live in Butte
